Ajax makes the town part of the ski day
Downtown Aspen and the Silver Queen Gondola belong to the same mountain story. Aspen Mountain, commonly called Ajax, rises from town; that relationship is its strongest argument for someone who wants restaurants, accommodation and skiing in one urban setting.
Convenience at the bottom should not be mistaken for gentleness above it. The operator positions Ajax primarily for intermediate and expert skiing. A never-ever skier needs a teaching plan, and Buttermilk's documented learning facilities make it the useful comparison.
The mixed-group question
Would everyone rather stay together in town and travel to different mountains, or stay nearer the mountain where lessons happen? There is no universal answer. RFTA makes regional transport part of the discussion, while the exact property-to-stop walk still needs checking.
Ajax is compelling when the town itself matters and the skiers already have some experience. Calling every Aspen-area mountain interchangeable would erase precisely what makes this one appealing.
